JONESBORO, Ark.—Florida Gulf Coast University women’s basketball team lost 68-58 to Arkansas State University at First National Bank Arena in Jonesboro, Ark. on Wednesday, Dec. 3

FGCU led 16-14 after the first quarter. Nay Staton led the Eagles scoring six points. Shameir Quimby hit a three. Jalei Pillow, Cerina Rolle and Anna Mortag each added two points and Karina Gordon had one point.

The Eagles outscored the Red Wolves 19-16 in the second quarter taking a 35-30 lead into halftime. Staton scored six points for FGCU including a three. Gordon also had six points hitting a pair of threes. Mortag had five points including a three and Sinai Douglas finished with two points.

Arkansas State battled back in the third outscoring FGCU 19-15 in the quarter, cutting the Eagles lead to one at 50-49 heading into the fourth. Pillow led the Eagles in the quarter scoring six points. Douglas added five points. Rolle and Mortag each finished with two points.

The Red Wolves took a 55-50 lead early in the fourth on back-to-back threes. FGCU tied the game at 55-all with 5:24 left on a three by Pillow and layup by Quimby. The Eagles followed with a free throw by Gordon with 4:20 left taking a 56-55 lead. Arkansas State answered with a three, a tip-in and a free throw taking a 61-56 lead with 2:31 left. FGCU responded with a shot by Mortag making it 61-58 with 2:12 remaining. The Red Wolves followed with a three and four shots from the line to end the game.

Staton finished the game with 12 points for the Eagles. Mortag came close to a double-double with 11 points and a team high seven rebounds. Pillow also scored 11 points.

Crislyn Rose led the Red Wolves scoring 22 points including four 3-pointers. Zyion Shannon came close to a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds. Mimi McCollister added eight points including a pair of threes.

The difference in the game came down to 3-pointers, turnovers, points off turnovers and steals.

Arkansas State made 11 threes, while FGCU made six. The Red Wolves forced 24 turnovers scoring 22 points off them, while the Eagles forced 13 turnovers scoring 12 points off them. Arkansas State came up with 15 steals and FGCU seven.

FGCU finished 18 of 43 shooting including six threes. The Eagles made 16 shots from the line, had 36 rebounds, 12 assists.

Arkansas State finished 25 of 69 shooting including 11 threes. The Red Wolves made seven shots from the line, 35 rebounds and 11 assists.

FGCU (2-5) remains on the road heading to Boca Raton, Fla. to play Florida Atlantic University on Friday, Dec. 12 at 11 a.m.
