Florida Gulf Coast University women’s basketball team (2-4) will play Florida Atlantic University (5-3) in Boca Raton, Fla. at Abessinio Court at Eleanor R Baldwin Arena on Friday, Dec. 12 at 11 a.m.
The Eagles are looking to recover from a 68-58 road loss to Arkansas State on Wednesday, Dec. 3. FGCU held a one-point lead 50-49 heading into the fourth quarter of that game but were outscored 19-8 in the fourth securing Arkansas State’s win.
Nay Staton finished the game with 12 points for FGCU. Anna Mortag came close to a double-double with 11 points and a team high seven rebounds. Jalei Pillow also scored 11 points.
The difference in the game came down to 3-pointers, turnovers and steals.
Arkansas State made 11 threes, while FGCU made six. The Red Wolves forced 24 turnovers scoring 22 points off them, while the Eagles forced 13 turnovers scoring 12 points off them. Arkansas State came up with 15 steals and FGCU seven.
FAU returns home from a 47-44 road win over Western Kentucky University on Wednesday, Dec. 3
Zahira Arizmendi led the Owls scoring 14 points including four 3-pointers. Destyne Jackson added nine points including a three. Jess Moors and Grace Carstensen each finished with six points, each hitting a pair of threes. Haley Walker was the team’s leading rebounder grabbing nine rebounds.
The key stats in FAU’s win were three point shooting and turnovers.
The Owls made 10 threes while WKU only made four. FAU forced 25 turnovers scoring 19 points off those turnovers. WKU forced 16 turnovers scoring 12 points off of them.
In order for FGCU to win they will need to limit FAU’s three-point shooting and offensively they will need avoid the third and fourth quarter issues from their game against Arkansas State. Once the Eagles get control of the game they need to keep control and not let it slip away.
