FORT MYERS, Fla.— Florida Gulf Coast University women’s basketball team lost 105-43 to No. 3 University of South Carolina at Alico Arena in Fort Myers on Saturday, Dec. 20

Joyce Edwards led the Gamecocks with a double-double of 29 points and 10 rebounds. She finished five points off her career-high of 34 points that was set in South Carolina’s 103-44 win over University of South Florida in Tampa on Thursday, Dec. 18 . Edwards finished 14 of 19 shooting and had one free throw.

South Carolina held a 24-11 lead over FGCU after the first period. Sinai Douglas led FGCU in the quarter with six points on two 3-pointers which gave the Eagles an early 6-2 lead. Nay Staton also hit a three and Anna Mortag made a layup.

The Gamecocks had a 53-21 lead at half outscoring the Eagles 29-10 in the second period. Cerina Rolle hit a three for FGCU, Karina Gordon scored on a two-and-one opportunity. Douglas an Eve Alexander also made shots.

South Carolina opened the third period with a 10-0 run. FGCU answered with a three by Douglas with 6:24 left in the period. The Gamecocks followed with an 8-0 run before the Eagles answered with two shots at the line from Staton. South Carolina followed with a layup. FGCU answered with three shots at the line by Staton. The Gamecocks followed with another layup. The Eagles responded with two shots at the line by Alexander and South Carolina answered with back-to-back layups by Edwards giving the Gamecocks a 79-31 lead going into the fourth.

South Carolina opened the final period with a layup and FGCU followed with a layup by Rolle. The Gamecocks responded with two shots at the line and the Eagles answered with a three by Rolle. South Carolina followed with two more shots and Rolle responded with a jump shot for the Eagles. South Carolina then hit a three and FGCU answered with a three by Douglas. The Gamecocks then went on an 8-0 run before the Eagles answered with a layup by Maca Retamales for FGCU’s final points. South Carolina then went on a 7-0 run with the Gamecocks’ final point coming on a three with 27 seconds left.

Douglas finished with 14 points for the Eagles including four 3-pointers. Rolle had 10 points and a team high five rebounds. Staton finished with eight points.

Madina Okot was the second highest scorer for the Gamecocks with 27 points finishing 12 of 16 shooting including a three, she also had 12 rebounds. Ta’Niya Latson scored 15 points and Maryam Dauda finished with 12 points.

South Carolina scored 74 points in the paint and FGCU 10, the Gamecocks forced 20 turnovers scoring 34 points off those turnovers and the Eagles forced 12 turnovers scoring three points off them, South Carolina grabbed 51 rebounds and FGCU had 18 rebounds.

FGCU finished 14 of 52 shooting including seven 3-pointers. South Carolina finished 45 of 72 shooting including six 3-pointers.

FGCU Head Coach Raina Harmon spoke with FGCU Athletics after the game stating in her post-game press conference “I think about our start, that’s who we can be right? That’s what we’re capable of. Coming down, knocking down threes, we distribute the ball, we score evenly…Although it was a very lopsided game, there were still a lot of ‘Oohs’ and ‘Aahs’ late in the fourth quarter because we were still getting to the basket, still hitting the right person getting open threes,” coach Harmon said.

FGCU (3-6) hosts NCCAA DI University of Fort Lauderdale (2-9) at Alico Arena on Monday Dec. 22 at 1 p.m.
