FORT MYERS, Fla. — Zyree Collins scored 25 points leading Austin Peay State University to an 82-71 victory over Atlantic Sun Conference opponent Florida Gulf Coast University on Thursday night.
The Governors used a barrage of 14 3-pointers and 16 points off turnovers to hold off a second-half charge from the Eagles at Alico Arena.
FGCU trimmed a nine-point halftime deficit to 63-62 following a pair of Michael Duax free throws with 9:01 remaining. However, the Eagles’ offense stalled, failing to record a field goal for more than eight minutes. The drought finally ended on an Isaiah Malone dunk with 12.7 seconds left, but the Governors had already sealed the win at the free-throw line.
JR Konieczny paced the Eagles with 20 points and eight rebounds. Jordan Ellerbee added 16 points and Duax finished with 12.
Collins shot 7-for-14 from the field and 8-of-11 from the free-throw line for Austin Peay. Tate McCubbin added 15 points, hitting four 3-pointers, while Anton Brookshire scored 12 and Collin Parker had 11.
The Governors outshot the Eagles from the perimeter, making 14 3-pointers to FGCU’s eight. Austin Peay also held the advantage at the line, finishing 18-of-25 compared to 11-of-17 for the Eagles.
FGCU trailed 42-33 at halftime despite 11 points from Ellerbee.
FGCU (7-9, 1-2 ASUN) returns to action at home against Lipscomb on Saturday at 4 p.m.
