FORT MYERS, Fla. – Jordan Ellerbee scored 22 points to lead the Florida Gulf Coast University men’s basketball team to a 90-81 win over Atlantic Sun Conference rival North Florida at Alico Arena on Thursday.
Ellerbee shot 8-for-11 from the floor and 4-for-5 from the free-throw line. Isaiah Malone added 20 points and J.R. Konieczny chipped in 19. With the win, FGCU improves to 5-8 in the ASUN, while North Florida falls to 4-9.
Kent Jackson led the Ospreys with 24 points, including four 3-pointers. He was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line.
North Florida cut the lead to 84-78 with 43 seconds left on a 3-pointer by Kamrin Oriol, but the Ospreys were unable to close the gap further before time expired.
The Eagles dominated the interior, outscoring North Florida 42-24 in the paint. FGCU held a slight edge on the boards, outrebounding the Ospreys 39-36. The Eagles also capitalized on 11 turnovers, converting them into 13 points.
FGCU head coach Pat Chambers told FGCU Athletics the win provides momentum for the remainder of the season.
“It gives us definite confidence moving forward,” Chambers said. “We needed to get this one. And we did. We’re treating every game like ‘1-0’. We’ll see if we can get a little bit better tomorrow in film and on the court and Friday, same thing.”
Konieczny also spoke with FGCU Athletics regarding the win.
“It feels good,” Konieczny said. “Love the home atmosphere, love the crowd … we still have things to work on and clean up, but I love the effort we played with tonight.”
FGCU remains at home to host Stetson University at 2 p.m. Saturday at Alico Arena.
