ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. — The Florida Gulf Coast University men’s golf team secured a share of the Johnnie-O at Sea Island title Tuesday, finishing in a tie for first place with Georgia Southern at the Sea Island Resort’s Plantation Course.
The Eagles maintained a solo lead through much of the event before a final-round surge by Georgia Southern forced a dead heat at 42-under-par.
Christian Figueredo led the FGCU lineup, finishing in a tie for 10th with a 10-under-par 206 after carding rounds of 69, 66, and 71. Nolan Harper followed closely in a tie for 12th at 9-under 207, while Sebastian Gamboa and Sacha Ruiz both tied for 21st with 7-under totals of 209. Brett Moore rounded out the team scoring in a tie for 27th at 6-under 210.
Competing as an individual, Tom Scullion finished 83rd with a 19-over 235.
FGCU Head Coach Andrew Danna credited the tournament organizers and his team’s effort in a statement to FGCU Athletics.
“I want to thank Johnnie-O, Sea Island and especially Rutgers University for putting on a great event. Congratulations to Georgia Southern as well. They certainly played a great tournament this week. I’m really proud of our team for all the hard work and preparation they put in going in to this event. It showed with their consistent play. We are looking forward to our next opportunity to compete next week.”
The Eagles return to action March 15-17 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, for the General Hackler Championship at the Dunes Golf & Beach Club.
