FORT MYERS, Fla. – The University of North Florida men’s tennis team (11-7, 2-0 ASUN) spoiled Florida Gulf Coast University’s Senior Day on Friday, clinching a 4-1 Atlantic Sun Conference victory over the Eagles at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
Prior to the match, FGCU (8-12, 1-1 ASUN) held a ceremony to honor Stavros Hadjivarnava, Gustav Hasslegren, Mika Bunjes, and Pablo Paternostro. While Bunjes and Paternostro are listed as juniors on the athletic roster, both were recognized alongside their graduating classmates.
The Eagles’ lone victory came from Court 3, with Bunjes winning his singles match 6-2, 6-1 over Kyle Piqueras, cutting the Ospreys’ lead to 2-1.
North Florida responded with Joao Portugal beating Hadjivarnava 6-2, 6-3 on Court 4, followed by Aron Major defeating CJ Smith in a three-set battle 6-0, 3-6, 6-1 to clinch the match.
The Ospreys opened the match by taking the doubles point to quickly bring an end to FGCU’s celebration. The duo of Riccardo Ciulli and Youssef Labbene won 6-4 over Tanner Povey and Smith, followed by Breno Marques and Enrique Pena clinching a 7-6 (7-4) victory over Bunjes and Hadjivarnava.
Despite the doubles point being decided, the Eagles did pick up a win with Paternostro and Stefan Correa recovering from a 5-3 deficit to beat Andreas Scott and Major, 7-6 (7-1).
UNF followed with Scott beating Povey 6-3, 6-2 at the top spot, giving the Ospreys a 2-0 lead.
FGCU travels to Tampa to play South Florida at 5 p.m. Friday, April 3.
