JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Florida Gulf Coast University softball team hits the road for a three-game Atlantic Sun Conference series against Jacksonville University, beginning with a 6 p.m. matchup Friday at the Debbie and Fred Pruitt Softball Complex. The Eagles will conclude the weekend set Saturday with a doubleheader against the Dolphins, with the first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.

The Eagles (13-21, 7-2 ASUN) enter the weekend deadlocked with Stetson for the top spot in the ASUN Graphite Division. FGCU looks to regain momentum after taking two of three games from North Florida last weekend, despite dropping the series finale in an 8-5 loss on Sunday.

In Sunday’s finale, the Ospreys jumped to an early lead, tagged four runs in the second inning to go up 5-1. FGCU’s offense roared back in the fifth, using a four-run outburst punctuated by a K’Mari Williams RBI double to knot the score at 5-5. However, North Florida reclaimed the lead for good in the sixth when Grace Shaw delivered a two-run double, followed by a solo home run from Bella Cimino in the seventh to ice the 8-5 win and avoid the weekend sweep.

Standing in their way is a surging Jacksonville squad (21-14, 6-3 ASUN), currently third in the division. The Dolphins carry a four-game winning streak into the series, bolstered by a dominant sweep of West Georgia that concluded with a 2-0 shutout victory Sunday.

Parris Wiggs leads the offensive charge for FGCU, entering the weekend with a team-high .364 batting average and a .447 on-base percentage. While Wiggs currently sits just shy of the official 75% games-played threshold to qualify for conference leaderboards, her 23 starts in 24 games prove she is the centerpiece of the FGCU lineup.

She is joined at the top of the leaderboard by Sietske Drijvers, who maintains a steady .314 average. Kiki Daniels leads the clubhouse with six home runs and a .548 slugging percentage. The Eagles’ primary run producer remains Mackenzie Leiti, whose 19 RBIs pace the squad, while Olivia Black continues to disrupt opponents on the basepaths, successfully swiping 9-of-10 stolen base attempts so far this season.

In the circle, Julia Bacoulis (6-10) leads the Eagles’ pitching staff with a team-high 55 strikeouts. The freshman enters the series with a 4.46 ERA and a 1.77 WHIP. Grace Taylor (5-6) has provided a steady presence with a 4.58 ERA and a team-best 1.45 WHIP, while Victoria Ash (2-3) and Tegan Gabrielse (0-2) round out the rotation with ERAs of 5.54 and 7.24, respectively.

Jacksonville is anchored by Sarah Beth Brake, who enters the series with a .885 slugging percentage, fueled by 11 home runs and 32 RBIs, while maintaining a .414 batting average and a .476 on-base percentage. She is flanked by Jaida Thomas, who provides a multi-dimensional threat with a .343 average, 19 RBIs, and a .464 OBP. Thomas is currently tied for second on the team with 19 RBIs and creates additional havoc on the basepaths, where she is also tied for the team lead with nine stolen bases.. Adding to the Dolphins’ depth is Kate Linkletter, with a .342 batting average and a team-high .528 on-base percentage.

Jacksonville counters with a pitching staff led by ace Jacy Harrelson (12-6), who carries a team-best 2.90 ERA and 1.34 WHIP. Harrelson has been the Dolphins’ primary strikeout threat, fanning 74 batters so far this season. Reese Wells (4-3) provides a reliable second option in the rotation, sporting a 3.90 ERA and a 1.60 WHIP. Rounding out the core staff is Jordan White (4-4), who holds a 4.75 ERA and a 1.58 WHIP, while ranking second on the team with 28 strikeouts.

For FGCU to reclaim sole possession of first place, the primary objective will be containing Brake. The Eagles’ pitching staff must pitch carefully to the Dolphins’ slugger, as her .885 slugging percentage can change a game with one swing.

Offensively, the Eagles need to leverage their speed early; if Wiggs and Black can reach base and disrupt the rhythm of Jacksonville ace Harrelson, it will open up RBI opportunities for players like Leiti and Daniels.

Furthermore, FGCU must minimize the “big inning” that plagued them in their recent loss to North Florida; maintaining defensive composure and limiting free passes from the circle will be essential to cooling off a Jacksonville squad currently riding a four-game win streak.
