FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Florida Gulf Coast University women’s tennis team (14-6) took No. 56 University of North Florida (20-0) to the brink of defeat Friday at the FGCU Tennis Complex, ultimately falling 4-3.

With the match tied 3-3, the dual was decided on Court 3, where FGCU’s Ashley Matz was forced to withdraw due to injury against Aryana Bartlett with the final set deadlocked at 5-5. Matz lost her opening set 6-7 (8-10) to Bartlett and battled back to take the second 7-5.

The Ospreys opened the day taking the doubles point with Laurie Barendse and Isabel Oliveira beating Nora Svensson and June Bjork 6-3, while Anslee Long and Bartlett won 6-4 over Cecilie Maeland and Anjali Kotecha.

The Eagles responded in singles with Sabrina Jaramillo beating May Fadida 6-2, 6-3 to tie the match at 1-1. UNF answered with Oliveira defeating Bjork 6-4, 6-3. Barendse secured a 6-0, 7-5 victory over Svensson extending the Ospreys advantage to 3-1. FGCU did not go away with Maeland defeating Gabby Goyins 6-4, 6-4, followed by Kotecha forcing the 3-3 tie with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 win over Long.

FGCU remains home hosting South Alabama in its regular season finale for an Easter Sunday match at 10 a.m. at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
