FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Florida Gulf Coast University baseball team (20-13, 6-7 ASUN) lost the second game of its three-game Atlantic Sun Conference series 4-1 to Jacksonville on Saturday at Swanson Stadium. With the loss, the Dolphins clinch the series victory following back-to-back wins over the Eagles.
Drew Seidel was the lone offensive bright spot for the Eagles, going 2-for-2 at the plate with a walk and scoring FGCU’s only run in the eighth inning on a balk.
Seidel’s performance from the bottom of the order drew praise from FGCU head coach Dave Tollett.
“I think Drew’s had a great Friday night, a great Saturday and being in the nine hole to spin that around to the top of the lineup he did pretty impressive and he’s earned a spot,” Tollett said. “He’s getting his chance to play and he’s done a good job. He’s a very good defensive player. He brings a lot to us if he can get it going offensively because he has a weapon and a speed that is pretty impressive.”
While Seidel found success, the rest of the Eagles’ lineup struggled to find a rhythm against Jacksonville starter Brendan Holland.
“I thought their kid (Brendan Holland) did an excellent job,” Tollett added. “He kept us off balance we couldn’t get nothing going. Going into the eighth was I think the first time. It was only the second time we had a runner in scoring position. We were running all game and we just couldn’t get nothing going.”
Jacksonville (17-17, 6-8 ASUN) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Logan Baratta that scored Sam Grunberg, who had reached on a leadoff triple. The Dolphins extended the lead in the fifth on a Sammy Mummau RBI single. Jacksonville added two insurance runs in the top of the eighth on a two-run single by Derek Bermudez.
Brendan Holland (2-4) earned the win for the Dolphins, allowing just four hits while striking out seven in seven innings of work. Chris Diaz (2-1) was charged with the loss for the Eagles, giving up one earned run on four hits in six innings. Despite the loss, Diaz was steady on the mound, striking out eight batters.
“I thought it was his best performance of the year,” Tollett said of Diaz. “Our starter on Friday night and our starter on Saturday in 12 innings has given up one earned run. We’ve just go to figure it out in the bullpen.”
The Eagles look to avoid the sweep in the series finale Sunday at Swanson Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
