MIAMI, Fla. — The Florida Gulf Coast University swimming and diving team opened its season with a fifth-place finish out of seven teams, totaling 984 points at the TYR Fall Classic hosted by Florida International University at the Doral Aquatic Center on Friday, Oct. 2, and Saturday, Oct. 3.
East Carolina University won the meet with 1,174 points, followed by FIU (1,060.5), Florida Atlantic University (1,047), and Tulane University (1,018.5), while FGCU finished ahead of Keiser University (854) and St. Thomas University (727).
“First meet of the year, we learned a lot about ourselves,” FGCU head coach Dave Rollins told FGCU Athletics. “There were some really strong performances, which is exciting given how challenging our training is at the moment. However, looking at this from a zoomed-out perspective, there is a lot of opportunity for improvement as we get into more serious competition.”
On the boards, Alexandra Andueza swept both diving events for the Eagles, winning the 3-meter with 289.15 points and the 1-meter with 259.65 points. Kaylin Olson added a second-place finish in the 1-meter B final (212.65) and a third-place finish in the 3-meter B final (210.00), while Bella Pfeil placed second in the 1-meter C final with 221.50 points.
Following her performance on Andueza was named the ASUN Conference Women’s Diver of the Week on Monday.
Jasmin Kroll led the Eagles in the pool by scoring in four individual events. Kroll captured runner-up finishes in the 50-yard freestyle in 23.40 seconds and the 200-yard free in 1:51.87. She placed third in the 100-yard free (52.04 seconds) and took third in the 500-yard free B final (5:09.69), which was good for 11th overall.
Izzy Ackley had a strong showing with a second-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke in 55.55 seconds and a fifth-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:06.05. Charlotte Driesse won the 200-yard freestyle B final in 1:52.62, good for 9th overall, while also placing fourth in the 500 free (5:08.57) and fifth in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:11.37.
Aislyn Barnett took fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:23.98 and fifth in the 400-yard IM (4:36.93). Nori Hetyei finished fourth in the 200-yard butterfly (2:10.24). Olivia Bates placed third in the 400 IM B final (4:32.80)—good for 11th overall—and second in the 500 free C final (5:15.07), which was good for 18th overall. In the 50 free C final, Sydney Ringwald finished third in 24.56 seconds for 19th overall, and Audrey Sambrook finished in 24.88 seconds for 21st overall.
The Eagles’ A relays all placed in the top five, highlighted by a third-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:44.44 by the team of Ackley, Cassie Bauer, Hetyei, and Leah Gentry-Tuney.
FGCU returns home to host Keiser in its first dual meet of the season at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10, at the FGCU Aquatics Center.
