MIAMI, Fla. — The Florida Gulf Coast University men’s golf team finished in 11th place at The Bryson Invitational on Wednesday following a final-round 304 at Trump National Doral’s Blue Monster.
The Eagles entered the final round tied for seventh after opening the three-day invitational with rounds of 293 and 294. However, final-day big numbers pushed FGCU down the 12-team leaderboard to a three-day total of 27-over 891.
FGCU finished one shot ahead of 12th-place Furman University and five shots behind 10th-place Seton Hall University. College of Charleston won the invitational with a three-round score of 19-under 845.
“The Blue Monster is about as demanding a test as you’ll find in college golf, and we battled a really strong group of teams all week,” FGCU head coach Lee McCoy told FGCU Athletics. “Christian [Figueredo] played some fantastic golf to put himself in contention, and Jay [Wilson] showed a lot of maturity for a freshman. We made plenty of birdies over the three days, but the big numbers hurt us today. That’s something we can clean up, and this group will learn a lot from competing on a course like this.”
Despite the team’s late slide, Christian Figueredo delivered a strong performance for FGCU. The senior opened the invitational with a 4-under 68 to share the first-round lead. He backed it up with an even-par 72 in round two to hold a tie for second on the individual leaderboard before turning in a 4-over 76 in the final round. Figueredo’s three-round total of even-par 216 secured him a tie for 11th place.
Jay Wilson tied for 33rd with a three-round total of 5-over 221 (73-73-75). Wilson’s final-round 75 was the Eagles’ lowest score of the day. Mason Fundingsland tied for 41st with an 8-over 224 (74-74-76).
Rounding out the lineup, Alfie Storer tied for 55th overall at 14-over-par 230 (78-75-77), while Brody Stevenson finished 60th with a 19-over-par 235 (78-76-81).
FGCU concludes its fall schedule on Oct. 18-19 in Vero Beach, Fla., at the Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational.
