MIAMI LAKES, Fla. — Florida Gulf Coast University sophomore Annie Yost captured her first collegiate individual victory, leading the FGCU women’s golf team to a second-place team finish at the two-day, three-round Pat Bradley Invitational held Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 26-27, at Miami Lakes Golf Club.
Following her standout performance, Yost was named the ASUN Conference Women’s Golfer of the Week on Thursday, Oct. 29.
Yost entered Tuesday’s final round holding the individual lead and navigated a pressure-packed afternoon to secure co-medalist honors against top-tier Power Four competition alongside Arkansas State University’s Mackenzie Cloutier and University of Miami’s Rebekah Gardner—an ACC opponent who was competing as an individual—finishing at 1-under 215 (76-68-71).
Battling severe coastal winds, heavy humidity, and narrow fairways, Yost relied on strict discipline and mental focus to protect her position down the stretch.
“It definitely was a little nerve-wracking after 36 holes had concluded on Monday,” Yost said. “I knew I did have a target on my back, and everybody was trying to go out and beat me. I just really tried to stay in my bubble throughout the round on Tuesday, just kind of worry about things I could control—if I was committed over this golf shot or what club I liked.”
To handle the brutal conditions on the back nine, Yost utilized precise tactical adjustments off the tee and into the greens.
“For driver, I would say just teeing it down a little bit lower and gripping down on my club, and just really having a committed swing, picking a good target, and just trusting that I’m good enough to hit it where I want to,” Yost explained. “The back nine is definitely a lot harder than the front side, so I knew that pars were going to be good on the holes that were playing straight into the wind, and had a couple of good par saves.”
FGCU head coach Shannon Sykora was quick to praise Yost’s composure under pressure and her ongoing technical growth from her freshman to sophomore season.
“She’s just getting a little more comfortable out there in playing in these tournaments. As a freshman everything’s new. I think she’s just settled in a little bit and understands how to score a little bit better. Her putting’s been better, short game’s been really good, I think that’s been the most improvement. She’s mentally just settled down and has a little more confidence,” Sykora said.
As a team, the Eagles put together a strong fall-season finale across the 54-hole tournament, posting a final-round 294 for a 16-over 880 total to finish as runner-up. FGCU finished just three shots behind champion Arkansas State (877, +13) and four ahead of third-place Grand Canyon University (884, +20). Big Ten opponent University of Michigan finished fourth at 23-over 887, followed by ASUN Conference foe Jacksonville University rounding out the top five at 29-over 893.
Reflecting on the collective grind over Monday and Tuesday, Coach Sykora emphasized the team’s resilience and consistency.
“We were more consistent, I think, and certainly the last day we got off to a good start and we were right there at the end,” Sykora noted. “That’s what you want—you want a chance to win at the end. A lot of good things have happened over the semester, and it’s nice to end on a good note.”
Beyond Yost’s championship performance, FGCU had strong scoring throughout the lineup to claim the second place. Freshman Sarah Hyten tied for sixth at 3-over 219 after closing with an even-par 72 (73-74-72), while Sydney Deal tied for 12th at 6-over 222 (75-70-77). Gia Culler-Guerra tied for 36th at 11-over 227 (78-73-76), and Charlene Lamb tied for 46th at 13-over 229 (81-73-75). Competing as individuals, Ann Burel tied for 26th at 8-over 224 (81-70-73) with a final-round 73, and Veronika Niklin tied for 76th at 20-over 236 (79-79-78).
Yost believes the strong finish provides invaluable momentum heading into the winter break.
“I think it was a huge boost of confidence,” Yost said. “It’s really nice to see hard work pay off. I’ve always dreamed of how I’d feel in this moment, and it definitely just gives me a boost. I want to continue to win, I want my team to win, and I’m really excited to make a statement in the spring and show everyone who I am.”
With the fall slate officially in the books, FGCU will shift focus to off-season conditioning before tournament play resumes Feb. 1-3 at the UCF Challenge at Eagle Creek Golf Club in Orlando, Florida.
