FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University women’s basketball team opened its home schedule with an 89–59 victory over Sun Belt Conference opponent Arkansas State University on Saturday afternoon at Alico Arena.
Moving to 1–1 on the young season, the Eagles bounced back in dominant fashion, putting on a shooting clinic and overwhelming the Red Wolves (0–2) with suffocating defensive pressure.
Cerina Rolle led the Eagles scoring a game-high 16 points, Karina Gordon followed with 15 points, making 5-of-6 from behind the arc. Amelia Hobson added a career-high 14, and Lily Zeinstra finished with 12 points. Denika Lightbourne notched a career-high and game-high seven assists, and Sinai Douglas grabbed ten rebounds.
Reflecting on the bounce-back performance, head coach Raina Harmon pointed directly to the mental toughness and collective hunger of her team.
“As a coach, you’re like, what type of mental team do you have? Because you don’t really get to test that when you’re going against each other,” Harmon said post-game. “To be able to see our team come out, punch first, and keep punching. The media timeout in the fourth quarter I challenged them ‘The standard is the standard. There’s no let up.’ I don’t want to see many mistakes. I still want us to be able to box out. Be able to take away some of the paint points. Be able to push in transition. Be able to score and shoot the open three. I was really, really excited by the togetherness that I saw today. When you look at 24 assists, they’re willing to share the ball with each other.”
FGCU established a 22–13 lead in the first quarter, led by five points from Rolle alongside triples from Lightbourne and Gordon. The Eagles kept the pressure turned up in the second, outscoring the Red Wolves 22–10 to build a 44–23 halftime cushion behind six more points from Rolle and a pair of Gordon 3-pointers. FGCU pushed the pace further in the third with a 29–19 surge, fueled by 12 points from Hobson—including two free throws—alongside two more threes from Gordon and one from Rolle. Though A-State edged the hosts 17–16 in the final frame, Zeinstra’s five points and four from Ari Turla safely sealed the 89–59 final.
Gordon spoke post-game about her performance from behind the arc.
“Hand down, man down,” Gordon said. “My teammates and also Coach Raina instilled that confidence in me. If they have a hand down, shoot that thing. Like [Coach Harmon] said, in practice, we’ve been shooting the lights off the ball, and I know I showed that today. Once I saw that one shot go in, it was kind of over for them.”
Rolle emphasized the team’s commitment to the process moving forward as they build toward the conference slate.
“We’re feeling confident. That was our a big thing as a team that we wanted for ourselves, and I think we showed it,” Rolle said. “Keep trusting the process, trusting what the coaches have for us, and trusting each other. Once we just keep trusting, I feel like that’s going to really help us once tournament starts.”
Crislyn Rose led A-State with 14 points and three steals; Amina Gray and Monica Marsh each added 13 points, and Angela Carroll added seven points and eight rebounds for the Red Wolves.
FGCU shot .500 from the field and held Arkansas State to .278. The Eagles held a 53–36 rebounding advantage and hit 7-of-22 from beyond the arc to A-State’s 8-of-37. At the line, FGCU shot .750 (18-of-24) compared to .733 (11-of-15) for the Red Wolves. Both teams committed high turnovers with 21 for Arkansas State and 19 for FGCU, while the Eagles led 9–8 in steals.
FGCU continues a three-game homestand hosting Ave Maria University on Wednesday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m.
