Jacksonville, Fla—Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball team beat Jacksonville University 3-1 at Swisher Gymnasium in Jacksonville, Fla. on Friday, Nov. 14. The victory earns the Eagles the top standing in the Atlantic Sun Conference at 12-3 with one game remaining in the regular season, while the Dolphins fall to 11-4.
FGCU lost the opening set 28-26, however in the second set FGCU took control taking an early 6-1 lead with help from kills by Ava Smith, Barbara Koehler, Hanna Borer and an ace by Reese Burry. Jacksonville tightened the score to 13-10 but the Eagles extended the advantage to 20-12 with help from a kill by Koehler, a kill by Smith, another kill by Koehler, two kills by Julija Grubisic Cabo and an ace by Koehler. Jacksonville fought back to make it even at 25-25, then FGCU took the set 27-25 on kills by Camila Soto and Grubisic Cabo.
The Eagles continued their momentum in the third set taking an 11-5 lead to start thanks to more scoring from Grubisic Cabo, Koehler and three kills by Abby Toeniskoetter. FGCU then pushed the lead to 17-11 before taking the set 25-18.
The fourth set started tight between both teams but the Eagles were able to gain a 22-15 lead and took the set 25-19 with the game ending on a kill by Toeniskoetter.
Koehler led FGCU with 17 kills. Grubisic Cabo had a double-double of 16 kills and 10 digs. Toeniskoetter had 12 kills, Borer led the Eagles in assists with 31 and Burry finished with 10 digs.
FGCU Head Coach Thais Baziquetto-Allen spoke with FGCU Athletics after the game “I am so proud of this group. Tonight is the best that we have played together as one all season,” said head coach Baziquetto-Allen. “The execution from every position was precise and exactly what we needed.”
FGCU (18-8, 12-3 ASUN) remains in Jacksonville to play University of North Florida (13-15, 7-8 ASUN) at UNF Arena on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m.
