CARROLLTON, Ga.— Jasmine Jones scored 26 points and West Georgia hit 12 3-pointers to hand the Florida Gulf Coast University women’s basketball team its first conference loss of the season in a 63-56 victory Thursday night.
The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Eagles (8-8, 4-1 Atlantic Sun), who entered the night undefeated in league play. West Georgia (4-1 ASUN) extended its home winning streak to nine games.
FGCU trailed by as many as 14 points entering the fourth quarter but mounted a late 22-15 run to tighten the score. A pair of Anna Mortag free throws pulled the Eagles within 56-54 with 1:25 remaining, but FGCU could not complete the comeback in the final minute.
Jones led UWG with 26 points on 8-for-14 shooting, including six 3-pointers; she also finished a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. Sydne Tolbert added 12 points.
Nay Staton finished with a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Eagles on 5-for-15 shooting, including a 3-pointer. Sinai Douglas added 11 points.
While the Wolves dominated from the perimeter, FGCU controlled the interior. The Eagles outscored West Georgia 32-18 in the paint and held a 40-34 advantage on the boards. However, the Eagles’ 4-for-24 shooting from beyond the arc proved to be the difference against the Wolves’ 12-for-27 performance.
The Eagles trailed 14-11 after the opening frame. Douglas sparked the offense with a 3-pointer, while Jalei Pillow, Karina Gordon, Eve Alexander, and Mortag each added two points.
Both teams traded blows in the second quarter, scoring 12 points apiece to give West Georgia a 26-23 halftime lead. Staton led FGCU in the second with five points, supported by a Gordon 3-pointer and buckets from Cerina Rolle and Mortag.
The Wolves broke the game open in the third quarter, outscoring the Eagles 22-11 to take a 48-34 lead. Douglas led FGCU with four points in the period, while Staton, Rolle, and Jordan Campbell each added two.
In a final push, the Eagles outscored the Wolves 22-15 in the fourth quarter. Staton led the charge with six points, Alexander added five, and Rolle connected from deep. Despite the high-scoring finish, FGCU ran out of time to overcome the double-digit deficit.
FGCU Head Coach Raina Harmon spoke with FGCU Athletics after the game.
“We’ve relied on our defense to close games during this opening stretch of conference play. Tonight, we gave up too many open looks from three. However, I’m pleased at our ability to cut it to two late in the game, but it was a little too late to mount a comeback to victory.”
FGCU (8-8, 4-1 ASUN) travels to Charlotte, N.C., to play Queens University at 2 p.m. on Saturday
