FORT MYERS, Fla.— The Florida Gulf Coast University men’s basketball team suffered its third-straight Atlantic Sun Conference loss Thursday, falling 85-74 to Atlantic Sun Conference leader Queens University at Alico Arena.
With the win, Queens (11-9, 5-0 ASUN) remains undefeated in conference play, while FGCU (7-11, 1-4 ASUN) has lost four of its last five games.
The Eagles and Royals were tied at 62 with 6:55 remaining before Carson Schwieger hit a 3-pointer to give Queens a lead it would not relinquish. FGCU pulled within three following a Rahmir Barno layup with 4:40 left, but the Eagles failed to convert on their final three possessions down the stretch.
Queens controlled the stat sheet, outscoring FGCU 36-32 in the paint and finishing with a 41-37 rebounding advantage. The Royals’ perimeter shooting proved decisive, as they outshot the Eagles 9-4 from 3-point range.
Isaiah Malone led FGCU with 17 points, finishing 11-of-11 from the free-throw line. Barno added 15 points and Darren Williams chipped in 10. The Eagles finished a perfect 22-of-22 from the foul line as a team.
Jordan Watford led the Royals scoring 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting and 7-of-8 from the line. Schwieger and Maban Jabriel each scored 15 points, while Yoav Berman and Avantae Parker each added 11 points.
Queens led 41-33 at halftime. FGCU attempted a second-half rally behind Barno’s 10 points in the frame, but the Royals outscored the Eagles 44-41 in the final 20 minutes to seal the victory.
FGCU returns to action Saturday when it hosts the University of West Georgia at 2 p.m.
