CHARLOTTE, N.C.— The Florida Gulf Coast University women’s basketball team looks to bounce back from its first Atlantic Sun Conference loss of the season Saturday when it visits Queens University at Curry Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
FGCU (8-8, 4-1 ASUN) is coming off a 63-56 loss to the University of West Georgia on Thursday. The Wolves dominated from the perimeter, shooting 12-for-27 from 3-point range, while the Eagles finished just 4-for-24. Despite the shooting woes, FGCU controlled the interior, outscoring West Georgia 32-18 in the paint and holding a 40-34 rebounding advantage.
The Eagles attempted a fourth-quarter comeback, outscoring the Wolves 22-15 in the final period. A pair of Anna Mortag free throws pulled FGCU within 56-54 with 1:25 remaining, but the Eagles were unable to complete the rally in the final minute.
Nay Staton finished with a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Eagles on 5-for-15 shooting, including a 3-pointer. Sinai Douglas added 11 points.
Douglas leads the Eagles in scoring this season with 179 points through 16 games, followed by Staton (158) and Cerina Rolle (123). The trio averages a combined 28.7 points per game. Staton leads the team with 91 rebounds, while Douglas has recorded team highs in assists (51) and steals (22). Eve Alexander leads the defense with 11 blocks.
Queens (7-9, 1-4 ASUN) is looking to snap a four-game losing streak. The Royals most recently fell to Stetson University 69-61 on Thursday. Queens outscored the Hatters 26-17 in the fourth quarter but could not trim the lead to single digits until late in the game.
Stetson controlled the glass and the paint against the Royals, holding a 34-28 scoring edge inside and a 45-35 advantage in rebounds.
Dayuna Colvin scored 16 points for the Royals in the loss, while Jermany Mapp added 12 and Magda Freire chipped in 11.
Brenae Jones-Grant is the leading scorer for Queens with 189 points this season, followed by Ana Barreto (169) and Mapp (160). Hannah Hicks anchors the Royals’ interior with team highs in rebounds (119) and blocks (20). Colvin leads the squad with 46 assists, and Jones-Grant has a team-best 26 steals.
For FGCU to secure a victory against Queens and get back into the win column, the primary objective must be reclaiming their identity from the three-point line. After a cold shooting performance against West Georgia, the Eagles need their primary threats Sinai Douglas and Nay Staton to find their rhythm early to force Queens’ defense out of the paint.
Defensively, the key will be containing Queens’ perimeter volume and forcing them into a half-court grind. While FGCU showed they can dominate the interior, they cannot afford to let the Royals’ leading scorers, like Dayuna Colvin and Brenae Jones-Grant, get comfortable catch-and-shoot looks. If the Eagles can pair their rebounding advantage with a disciplined defensive effort that limits second-chance points for Hannah Hicks, they should be able to control the tempo and maintain their perfect all-time record against the Royals.
