FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Florida Gulf Coast University baseball team added four pitchers to its roster through the transfer portal over the past week, bolstering the Eagles’ staff ahead of the upcoming spring 2027 season.
FGCU officially announced the additions of NCAA Division II Lander University transfer Joshua Sanchez on July 17, Virginia Commonwealth University right-hander Chase Nystrom on July 21, Florence-Darlington Tech right-hander Asher Goss on July 22, and Texas Tech right-hander Heeryun Han on July 24.
Sanchez, a Pembroke Pines, Florida native who attended Elite Squad Academy, joins the program from Lander University with one year of eligibility remaining under the NCAA’s continuous five-year eligibility model. The 6-foot right-hander led the Bearcats’ pitching staff in 2026 with a 3.99 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP across 28 relief appearances. He posted a 6-3 record with three saves, striking out 44 batters in 49 2/3 innings while limiting opposing hitters to a .234 batting average.
Sanchez’s campaign helped lead Lander to a 36-21 overall record (20-10 PBC) and the 2026 Peach Belt Conference Tournament championship. In the first game of the PBC Championship series against North Georgia, Sanchez earned the win out of the bullpen, tossing 2 1/3 innings with four strikeouts to seal a 6-4 victory.
Nystrom returns to his home state as a rising sophomore with four seasons of athletic eligibility remaining under the continuous 5-in-5 model. The 6-foot-1, 180-pound right-hander from Trinity, Florida was a four-year letterwinner and senior Pitcher of the Year at A3 Academy in Tampa, where he earned MVP Pitcher honors at the 2023 17U Perfect Game Florida Select Championship.
During his freshman campaign at VCU, Nystrom logged 5 1/3 innings across four appearances—including one start—while recording five strikeouts for the 2026 Atlantic 10 Champion Rams. His season was highlighted by pair of two-inning relief outings against Old Dominion and No. 6 Coastal Carolina, where he fanned a career-high two batters against the Chanticleers. He is the son of former Florida outfielder and MLB draft pick Pete Nystrom.
Goss arrives in Fort Myers via the junior college ranks after spending two seasons at Florence-Darlington Technical College. A 6-foot, 188-pound right-hander out of Gray Court, South Carolina who attended Laurens High School, the rising junior retains three seasons of athletic eligibility under the continuous 5-in-5 model.
He helped a Stingers squad that finished the 2026 campaign with a 50-13 overall record and a 23-7 mark in Region 10 Division I play. Across four appearances (two starts) in 2026, he posted a 1-0 record with five strikeouts and a 1.41 WHIP over 5 2/3 innings pitched while holding opposing hitters to a .240 batting average. Goss then played summer ball with the Danville Otterbots in the Appalachian League, fanning 12 batters over 8 1/3 innings.
Han completes the quartet of portal additions, making his way to Fort Myers after spending his 2026 junior campaign in Big 12 territory with Texas Tech. A 6-foot-1 rising senior native of Gyeonggi-Do, South Korea who retains two years of athletic eligibility under the continuous 5-in-5 model, Han brings high-level Division I bullpen experience and athleticism to FGCU.
Used as a relief option for the Red Raiders, Han made 19 appearances out of the bullpen in 2026. While adapting to Big 12 hitters, the right-hander demonstrated key flashes of efficiency—highlighted by a four-game scoreless streak in March against Penn State, No. 24 UTSA, and Kansas. He also posted scoreless outings against conference foes TCU, Houston, and Cincinnati.
Prior to Texas Tech, Han showcased his overall athleticism across the junior college ranks, hitting .404 while making eight pitching appearances during his sophomore season at Los Medanos College in 2025.
With the additions of Sanchez, Nystrom, Goss, and Han, FGCU head coach Dave Tollett and the Eagles have significantly bolstered the depth and versatility of their pitching staff ahead of the spring 2027 season. By bringing in a blend of high-leverage Division II success, Atlantic 10 upside, a 50-win JUCO pedigree, and battle-tested Big 12 experience, FGCU has secured a diverse mix of reliable arms to fortify both the bullpen and the starting rotation.
