IRVINE, Calif. — Florida Gulf Coast University rising junior swimmer Cassie Bauer competed on the national stage on Thursday, July 30, representing the Gulf Coast Swim Team at the 2026 USA Swimming Toyota National Championships at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center.

Facing a 70-swimmer field in the women’s 50-meter breaststroke, the Moseley, Virginia native touched the wall in 32.61 seconds in Heat 7 of the preliminary sessions to finish sixth in her heat and 36th overall.

The championship itself holds significant historical weight in American swimming—it is the same event where Katie Ledecky set her 2014 world record in the 400-meter freestyle and where Olympic stars like Caeleb Dressel and Lilly King have competed. Bauer’s solid finish came in a stacked field of future Olympians and current NCAA All-Americans, proving she can hold her own against strong competition.

Bauer’s performance capped off a consistent summer long-course season with GCST. Across four major meets, she averaged 33.12 seconds in the 50-meter breast, peaking at a summer-best 32.55 at the Florida Summer Senior Champs before putting up a time of 32.61 at Nationals. She shaved over a full second from her earlier-summer mark of 33.71 at the Mark McCaw Summer Invitational.

The summer campaign follows her sophomore year at FGCU, where she earned ASUN First Team honors and helped set a school and conference record in the 200-meter medley relay (1:36.80). She now turns her focus back to Fort Myers for the upcoming 2026–27 collegiate season.

FGCU head coach Dave Rollins emphasized how valuable that high-level national experience is for both Bauer and the Eagles as a whole.

“I think for her, it helps continue to build her confidence in how she’s preparing as an athlete. And I think that can rub off on everybody that’s around her,” Rollins said. “Anytime you have people performing at a high level, others want to know, ‘What is it that she’s doing? What is it that they’re doing to help them perform on the national stage or the international stage?’

“So I think for her to continue to grow her confidence and belief in what she’s capable of doing is huge. The goal is to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Trials coming up soon. Summer of ’28 is not too far away—it’s two years away, but it’s going to be here before we know it. So trying to find those ways that we can help her and the teammates continue to develop to reach that level is something we’re always looking to do.”
