SHIZUOKA, Japan — The Florida Gulf Coast University men’s and women’s golf programs opened their 2026–27 seasons on the other side of the world, competing at the Pan Pacific University Golf Super League Tournament at Grand Fields Country Club. Both squads tested themselves across three rounds from Tuesday through Thursday against an international field, navigating a 71-par course setup.

McCoy makes debut as men finish sixth

Leading the way for the Eagles, the FGCU men’s golf team secured a sixth-place finish in a 14-team field. The Eagles posted a three-round total of 865 (283-292-290, +13), finishing 49 shots behind tournament champion Nihon University (816). The event marked the head coaching debut for Lee McCoy, who took over the reins of the defending ASUN champion program this summer.

“It was a good first look at where this team is heading, and a great experience getting to do it in Japan,” McCoy told FGCU Athletics. “We competed hard against a strong field all week, and I’m excited to keep building on it as the season goes.”

Alfie Storer led the FGCU lineup, finishing tied for 27th place with a 1-over-par total of 214. Storer delivered the Eagles’ lowest score for two consecutive rounds, closing out his week with a 72 (+1) after firing a team-best 70 (-1) in round two. Senior Christian Figueredo followed closely behind in a tie for 33rd place at 3-over-par 216 (70-73-73). Brody Stevenson finished in a tie for 46th at 6-over-par 219 (71-76-72).

Freshman Trevor Tingle rounded out the team scoring, finishing tied for 85th at 15-over-par 231 (79-76-73) while showing steady improvement across the three days. Meanwhile, freshman Jay Wilson got off to a strong start through 36 holes (70-73) before being forced to withdraw prior to the final round.

Women surge on final day behind Lamb’s 67

On the women’s side, FGCU head coach Shannon Sykora’s squad also made the long trek across the Pacific to open their campaign. Competing in a 12-team field, the Eagles posted a three-round total of 899 (304-306-289, +47) to place eighth overall, finishing 53 shots behind tournament champion Nihon University (846). FGCU saved its best performance for the final 18 holes, shaving 17 strokes off its second-round score to fire a 5-over 289 on Thursday.

“Great experience getting to compete overseas in Japan, and a good building block as we head into the rest of the season,” Sykora told FGCU Athletics.

Freshman Charlene Lamb led the Eagles in the final round, carding a team-best 4-under 67 to surge into a tie for 54th place overall at 8-over-par 221 (77-77-67). Lamb carded a 4-under 32 on the front nine with four birdies, before closing out her round with an even-par 35 on the back.

Junior Sydney Deal and sophomore Annie Yost followed closely behind, both finishing tied for 69th place at 12-over-par 225. Yost bounced back with an even-par 72 in the final round (76-77-72), while Deal turned in cards of 76, 72, and 77 over her three rounds.

Freshman Sarah Hyten carded a 4-over 75 in the final round to tie for 91st in her collegiate debut at 18-over-par 231 (75-81-75). Sophomore Gia Culler-Guerra matched Hyten’s final-round 75 to complete the FGCU lineup tied for 97th at 20-over-par 233 (78-80-75).

Up next for the Eagles

Both programs will take a brief break before returning to competition. The FGCU women head to Greenville, South Carolina, to compete in the Lady Paladin Invitational hosted by Furman at the Furman University Golf Course from Sept. 18 through Sept. 20. Meanwhile, the FGCU men will host their first home event of the fall, welcoming a competitive field to Estero, Florida, for the West Bay Collegiate Invitational at the West Bay Club from Oct. 5 through Oct. 6.
