COLUMBIA, Mo. — The Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball team (2-4) dropped a hard-fought four-setter to Wichita State (3-4) on Friday afternoon in its opening match of the Mizzou Tournament at the Hearnes Center, falling 3-1 (25-21, 25-22, 23-25, 25-22).

FGCU out-killed (54-52), out-assisted (51-49), and out-dug (63-52) the Shockers, but Wichita State’s net defense proved to be the difference maker, holding a 13-5 advantage in total team blocks.

The deciding fourth set was a battle featuring 12 ties and four lead changes. After an Erica Muhizi solo block tied the frame early at 8-8, the teams traded points until Wichita State pulled ahead 19-16. FGCU erased the deficit with a 3-0 run to level the score at 19-19 behind a Julija Grubisic Cabo kill, a Shocker error, and a block by Shay Heaney and Muhizi. Wichita State answered with four straight points to reach 24-19, but FGCU refused to quit. Katie Gielas came off the bench and made three kills on four swings (.750) to pull the Eagles within 24-22 before Wichita State sealed the victory on the final point.

Wichita State established early momentum in the opening frame, stretching an early lead to 20-14. The Eagles answered with a 5-0 run behind the serve of Abby Toeniskoetter—highlighted by a Grubisic Cabo kill, a Dinara Sabitova kill, and consecutive blocks by Sabitova, Muhizi, and Grubisic Cabo—to trim the deficit to 20-19 before the Shockers held on late despite five set kills from Maju Hildebrand.

FGCU showed similar resilience in the second set, overcoming an 11-6 deficit to tie the game at 17-17 on three consecutive kills from Muhizi, Sabitova, and Grubisic Cabo. The Eagles leveled the set again at 22-22 following a Camila Soto kill, a service ace from Heaney, and another Grubisic Cabo swing, but Wichita State scored the final three points to claim the 25-22 win and a 2-0 match lead.

The Eagles extended the match by dominating the third frame. FGCU engineered a 5-0 run behind Eliska Vytiskova’s serving and another 4-0 surge behind Heaney’s serve to build a commanding nine-point lead at 22-13, capped by a Muhizi kill. Wichita State staged a late run to pull within 24-23, but a combined block by Heaney and Hildebrand sealed the 25-23 win for FGCU, capping an 18-kill frame on .273 hitting.

Hildebrand led the FGCU attack, matching Wichita State’s Maddie Wilson with a match-high 13 kills—reaching double figures for the sixth consecutive match—alongside seven digs. Grubisic Cabo added 10 kills and seven digs, while Soto provided nine kills off the bench. Toeniskoetter chipped in eight kills on .333 hitting, and Muhizi anchored the net with four kills and four blocks.

Sabitova (26) and Vytiskova (20) combined for 46 assists, with Vytiskova adding 10 digs for a double-double. Libero Anna Marzella collected a season-high 15 digs and an ace, while Heaney finished with five kills and 10 digs.

Wichita State was led by Wilson’s double-double of 13 kills and 10 blocks. McKenzie Jones added 12 kills and Olivia Cohee recorded 11, with Jordan Heatherly directing the offense with 29 assists and Grace Hett tallying 13 digs.

FGCU continues tournament action at the Hearnes Center on Saturday evening against Arkansas State at 7 p.m. E.T.
