FORT MYERS, Fla. — An 84th-minute long-range strike deflected off a Florida Gulf Coast University defender and into the net Saturday night. The play handed the FGCU men’s soccer team a 2-1 defeat against ASUN Conference foe North Florida at Pickering Field.

The loss marks the second straight conference defeat for FGCU (2-4-0, 0-2-0 ASUN), while North Florida improved to 4-2-1 overall and 2-0-0 in ASUN play.

Ospreys’ defender Mark Romano provided the game-winner, firing a shot from well outside the penalty box that took a crucial deflection off the Eagles’ backline to beat the keeper. FGCU generated a final equalizing opportunity with one minute remaining, but the attempt sailed over the crossbar as time expired.

FGCU took the initial lead in the 16th minute through a sequence of one-touch passing. Brooks Beeman initiated the build-up with a behind-the-back pass up the sideline to Rico Felix, who found Flavio D’Angelo. D’Angelo delivered a low cross into the box for Aron Martinez, who turned it past the keeper to put the Eagles ahead 1-0.

North Florida answered in the 30th minute when Kaiss Mansouri navigated through traffic at the edge of the 18-yard box and curled a solo effort into the top right corner.

Despite holding a 12-11 edge in total shots, FGCU struggled to maintain set-piece parity, conceding a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks to North Florida. Both teams finished even with six shots on goal.

The physical match featured 25 combined fouls and four yellow cards, split evenly at two per side.

FGCU begins a three-game road swing starting Wednesday, Sept. 16, in Houston, Texas, against Houston Christian at 8 p.m. ET.
