LINCOLN, Neb. — The Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball team lost a four-set match to No. 1 University of Nebraska on Sunday at the Bob Devaney Sports Center, falling 25-10, 25-17, 25-27, 25-14 to conclude the Husker Invitational.

Despite the 3-1 final score, the Eagles (3-7) made program history in front of a sellout crowd of 10,497 by capturing the third set against the undefeated Cornhuskers (10-0). FGCU became just the third team this season to take a set from Nebraska, securing only the second set win against a top-10 opponent in program history.

Maju Hildebrand paced the FGCU attack by tying for the team lead with eight kills while anchoring the defensive effort with six digs, three blocks, and a service ace. Katie Gielas matched Hildebrand with eight kills of her own alongside four digs, a block, and an ace. Julija Grubisic Cabo contributed all-around with seven kills, eight digs, and an ace, while Abby Toeniskoetter chipped in seven kills and three total blocks. Directing the offense, Dinara Sabitova handed out a match-high 29 assists and added four kills.

Teraya Sigler led Nebraska’s attack with a match-high 13 kills, followed by Harper Murray with 11 and Ryan Hunter with seven. Manaia Ogbechie paced the Huskers at the net with a match-high eight blocks and four service aces, while Campbell Flynn directed the offense with 27 assists and Olivia Mauch anchored the back row with a match-high 17 digs.

Nebraska took control in the fourth frame to seal the match 25-14 after an early scare from FGCU. The Eagles cut Nebraska’s lead to 11-9 with a 4-0 run behind consecutive kills from Amany Kuwa, Toeniskoetter, Gielas, and Hildebrand, but the Huskers answered with a decisive 6-2 surge—highlighted by kills from Hunter and Murray alongside a Skyler Pierce service ace—to reassert command before closing out the afternoon.

The Huskers earned a 25-10 win in the opening set. FGCU found its offensive rhythm in the second set behind four kills from Gielas and three from Grubisic Cabo, staying within striking distance before Nebraska used a late scoring run to secure a 25-17 win and a 2-0 match advantage.

FGCU took advantage of Nebraska in the third set when the top-ranked Huskers decided to test the depth of their rotation, and the Eagles made certain the scoreboard reflected it by out-hitting the hosts and holding Nebraska to a .054 hitting percentage in a frame featuring nine ties and five lead changes. Trailing 10-5, FGCU strung together multiple multi-point rallies against the altered lineup. A combined block by Hildebrand and Toeniskoetter tied the set at 25-25, and an ensuing Nebraska error put the Eagles at set point. Hildebrand sealed the 27-25 victory with a service ace. Six different Eagles recorded a kill in the third set, led by three from Sabitova.

FGCU returns to Alico Arena for its ASUN Conference opener against Stetson on Saturday, Sept. 26, at 6 p.m.
