Fort Myers, Fla.—Florida Gulf Coast University men’s tennis team captured wins over Drake University, Florida Atlantic University and University of South Florida at the Bonita Bay Collegiate Open held Friday, Nov. 7 through Sunday, Nov. 9 at the Bonita Bay club in Bonita Springs, Fla.
The Eagles had five players pick up two singles wins over Drake.
Hugo Magnusson beat Drake’s Alan Gonzalez in straight sets 6-3, 6-3, then went on to beat Benjamin Johnson 6-4, 6-3. Mika Bunjes defeated Johnson 6-1, 7-6 (7-5), then moved on to beat Drake’s Jose Alessandro Hernandez Frias 6-4, 6-1. Pablo Paternostro beat Hernandez Frias 6-4, 6-7 (5-7) [10-1], then defeated Johnson 3-6, 6-0 [10-6]. Harry Michalowski beat Drake’s Francisco Landeras 6-4, 6-3, then defeated Drake’s Alex Yeager 7-5, 3-6 [10-6] and Stefan Correa beat Drake’s Adan Tarquino 6-2, 6-1, then beat Drake’s Arin Menon 5-7, 6-4 [10-7].
In doubles action the Eagles won all eight matches.
In their match against Florida Atlantic University the Eagles picked up two singles wins with Magnusson beating Jan Kusy 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) and Tanner Povey defeating Bullion Sharp 4-6, 7-5 [10-4].
FGCU also won two of the doubles matches with Gustav Hasslegren and Magnusson beating Kusy and Sharp 8-5, while Bunjes and CJ Smith defeated Luca Miremont and Lucca Acioly 8-7 (7-5).
The Eagles picked up one win over the University of South Florida with Correa beating Maximillian Mroz 4-6 7-5 [10-5].
FGCU men’s tennis returns to the court Friday, Nov. 14 through Saturday, Nov. 15 for the Pelican Bay Collegiate Invitational at the Pelican Bay Community Center in Naples, Fla. They will play Boston College and Barry University.
