Huntsville, Alabama—Florida Gulf Coast University women’s cross country team finished 17 of 28 teams at the NCAA South Regional Championship at John Hunt Park in Huntsville, Alabama on Friday, Nov. 14 thanks to a record run by FGCU’s Ozia Trujillo.

Trujillo led the Eagles in the 6k race finishing 11 of 202 runners with a time of 19:45, breaking former FGCU runner Kelly Perzanowski’s record of 20:38.9 from the 2013 NCAA South Regional Championship. 

FGCU’s Alise Petrova finished 91st with a time of 21:17, Tess Shultz finished 104th in a time of 21:27, Addison Torres finished 123rd in a time of 21:45 and Samatha Ruiz finished 153rd with a time of 22:24.

University of Florida won the regional championship, followed by the University of Tennessee and the University of Alabama.

Trujillo’s season is not over as she is expected to be named to the NCAA Championship race field of runners, the race is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 22 in Columbia, Missouri.

The selection show will take place at NCAA.com on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 5 p.m.
