Naples, Fla. — Florida Gulf Coast University men’s tennis team picked up wins over Barry University and Boston College during the two day Pelican Bay Collegiate Invitational at the Pelican Bay Community Center in Naples held Friday, Nov. 14 and Saturday, Nov. 15.
FGCU got 4 out of 7 singles wins against Barry with Gustav Hasslegren beating Antonin Chapuis 2-6, 6-4, 10-4. Stefan Correa defeating Cooper Dillon 3-6, 6-2, 10-8. Harry Michalowski beating Leo Caill 6-2, 2-6, 15-13 and CJ Smith defeating Hayze Loop 6-0, 4-6, 10-8.
In doubles play the Eagles took all three matches with Correa and Hugo Magnusson beating Yan Kodjoed and Caill 8-4. Jonathan Baron and Hasslegren defeating Thomas Machado and Dillon 8-1. Smith and Michalowski beating Stanislas De Samucewicz and Chapuis 8-7, 8-6.
The singles battle between the Boston College Eagles and FGCU Eagles ended in a split with FGCU taking 3 of 6 matches. Magnusson beat Matthew Carioscia 6-3, 3-6, 10-7. Baron beat Mai Gao 6-4, 6-2 and FGCU’s Pablo Paternostro defeated Matthew Overvelde 6-3,6-0.
FGCU took three doubles matches over Boston College with Baron and Hasslegren beating Liam O’Leary and Matvey Greschner 8-7, 7-1. Correa and Magnusson defeating Carioscia and Overvelde 8-7, 7-5. Smith and Michalowski beating Lukas Rais and Aidan Pack 8-6.
The final doubles match saw two opposing Eagles team up with FGCU’s Paternostro and Boston College’s Gao beating Boston College players Luke Levanat and Lucas Rao 8-1.

“It was an excellent two days of competition against Boston College and Barry. The Eagles played very well, going undefeated in doubles and 7-6 in singles. Back to back weekends is difficult at any point in the season and our guys handled it really well. The next two months, we will focus on making some improvements in a few areas, physically, technically and mentally and will be ready for the opening weekend in Orlando for January. A big thanks to the Pelican Bay Foundation, their staff and members for an awesome weekend,” coach Molino said.
FGCU travels to Orlando, Fla. to play the University of Louisiana on Saturday, Jan. 10 at Noon.
